MIPT’s Institute of Arctic Technology and ULNANOTECH to develop a wind turbine for the Arctic Regions
The memorandum was concluded in Moscow on 17 October within the annual Open Innovations Forum. The Director General of the Ulyanovsk Center for Technology Transfer LLC (ULNANOTECH) Andrey Redkin and the Executive Director of the Institute of Arctic Technology of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) Yury Vasilyev signed the document in the presence of the Governor Sergey Morozov.
“We were the first in the country to start localization of components manufacturing for wind power industry, and now we continue to do it successfully. Our enterprises participated in construction and provided some materials and services. Now we have new jobs in this sphere and we have developed new competences. ULNANOTECH stores all skills and knowledge in this field. I am sure that they have enough experience to complete such an interesting project”, – the Governor Sergey Morozov emphasized.
The main objectives for cooperation are creation of a modern Russian technology platform from independent power production facilities, and joint development of an arctic wind turbine.
“Now the Institute has a strategic task to support work of autonomous facilities without delivery of fuel, first of all for the infrastructure of the Northern Sea Route. In my opinion we have found a very good partner, the Ulyanovsk nanocenter and Ulyanovsk region in the whole, to develop an arctic wind turbine of Russian origin over two or three years and test it first in Yamal, and then on the Northern Sea Route”, – noted Yury Vasilyev, Executive Director of the Institute of Arctic Technology of MIPT.
It is planned that the project will be implemented within two-three years.
According to the CEO of the Ulyanovsk nanocenter ULNANOTECH Andrey Redkin, turbine development in Russia is a really promising area of work. "We have started to form project alliances with both industrial global market leaders in the field of wind energy and the strongest Russian universities and research institutes. The goal of the joint project with the Institute of Arctic Technology is to have an arctic wind turbine in Russia to generate wind energy, which will be combined with diesel generation and save the cost of electricity generation in the Arctic and in the North of the Arctic Circle. This problem is acute for Russia, as there are a large number of isolated grids. The need for delivery of diesel fuel for far distances effects the rise in electricity prices. I am delighted that we are implementing this joint project with MIPT and in a short time, we together with our global partners will be able to present a turbine designed for the Russian market", - he emphasized.
The document also envisages the involvement of the MIPT staff to the educational process of the Wind Energy Technologies Department that was jointly established by the Ulyanovsk State Technical University and the nanocenter.
